Are teacup Chihuahuas hypoallergenic?
Chihuahuas are not hypoallergenic. There are no hypoallergenic dogs. That’s because dog allergies are caused by dog dander and not dog fur. Each dog could affect an individual’s allergy differently.
A research article published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology compared the respiratory health of individuals who owned a teacup Chihuahua to those who owned a small breed dog of another breed.
The researchers concluded that owning a teacup dog is associated with a small increase in the risk of respiratory symptoms and allergies in individuals who already have an allergic or atopic condition. If you are allergic to the regular breed of the Chihuahua, you might not have an allergic reaction if you also have a life-threatening allergy to the teacup breed.
Are Chihuahuas good for allergy sufferers?
Your Chihuahua will not help your allergy issues. Allergies in dogs and people are not really related, but many people wrongly believe that because a dog was given to them, it will cause them to not suffer with allergies. Chihuahuas are hypoallergenic, but not good for allergies.
Are Chihuahuas small enough for some people with allergies?
No. Chihuahuas are long, like most terriers, and are smaller than most of the breeds that are considered small for the breed, like Yorkies, Maltese, and Pomeranians.
Are Chihuahuas bred to be little?
Chihuahuas are bred for the family pet, to be docile, friendly, and playful. They are typically very low to the ground, which is ideal for safe naps. Their cute little heads, however, make them ideal for cuddling.
