BASSET BLEU de GASCONGUE
Description: The Basset Bleu de Gascongne is a small but very muscular and sturdy dog. The height is 13-17 inches but the KCS has the height at 12-15 inches, and the weight is 35-45 pounds.
This is a working dog, and it is a hunting hound. This is a low slung but not heavy breed. They are slow and this is what was wanted from this breed. It has dwarf legs that slow its pace.
The Basset Bleu de Gascongne has very long ears are low set and reach to the end of their muzzle, they are said to stir up the scent, as it has its head down sniffing out the scents. They have great stamina. The body is longer than the height of the dog. The eyes are round and soulful; these are dark brown in color.
The coat color is the main feature of the Basset Bleu de Gascongne being mostly white it is a tricolor dog, with the white on the body; this is heavily ticked giving a blushed look. They have tan marking on the cheeks and underside of the ears and above the eyes. The blue color is developed to withstand the bright sunshine.
History: The Basset Bleu de Gascongne comes from the southwest of France in a place called Gascony. There are paintings from the 14th century showing this breed of dog. It is thought to be a cross of the Sainongeois Basset and the Grand Bleu breeds’. Hunting in France was big in the times before the French Revolution and this was restricted to nobility hunting on horseback only. After the Revolution hunting was done by all and often hunting on foot was common and so a slower, shorter dog the Basset Bleu de Gascongne may have come about.
This breed, like so many hunting dogs, nearly went extinct with the decline of the popularity of hunting and was saved by a man called Alain Bourbon, who worked hard to revive this breed. The KC of the UK recognizes this breed on its imported breed register. The UKC recognized the breed in 1991. It is not recognized by the AKC to date.
Temperament: The Basset Bleu de Gascongne is a stable dog, mostly friendly and has a steady if not happy nature. They do require good long daily walks, as they love to meander about and need good walks but not fast walks. They may seem not to require much exercise but this is not the case. Here is a dog that loves, is affectionate, and high spirited.
They are scent hounds and it is best to keep this dog on a lead when out walking, although not fast when they pick up a scent they will want to follow the trail. They need an owner to be firm but fair with good pack leadership that can meet the needs of this dog. They bond well with a family and will wish to be a part of that family. Care must be taken with other small pets such as rabbits as this is a hunting dog.
They can be known to be vocal and this may need to be worked on so they know to stop. They make good companion dogs providing you can meet the needs of the Basset Bleu de Gascongne. Good fencing is needed for the garden as off on the scent, they could well roam for hours and get lost. As with all dogs, training should be done from a young age. This dog-like most hounds can get distracted and so a firm but gentle approach is required, the reward methods work well, and once they know what is expected they learn well.
Health issues: The Basset Bleu de Gascongne has good general health and the only thing that comes up is that they can suffer from Bloat so smaller meals a few times a day are better than a large meal.
Grooming: The Basset Bleu de Gascongne needs little grooming. Just brushing over the coat, once a week is all that is required. Check the ears regularly for any problems.
Living conditions: If the right amount of exercise is given to this dog the Basset Bleu de Gascongne can live in an apartment, but they do need to have a garden with good fencing.
