Description: The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a small French hound. This dog is short-legged and the height is 12½ -15 inches. The head is medium in length, with a slight dome.

The jaws are strong and meet in a scissor bite. The nose should be black in color or very dark and have wide nostrils. The eyes are slightly oval and the coloring is dark, hazel. Ears are set the level to the eyes and these extend to the nose, they fold inwards and finish with a point.

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne front legs are straight and short but well boned, with feet that are straight tight and the pads are firm. The chest is wide and deep and the Basset Fauve de Bretagne has a level topline. The tail is high and is thick at the base tapering to a point, this reaches down to the hock. The coat is harsh, dense and lies flat to the skin, with the exception of the ears where it is soft and finer. The colors, we see are; red-wheaten, fawn and gold-wheaten and they can have a white spot on the chest. This dog’s life expectancy is 10 years.

History: The Basset Fauve de Bretagnes’ history is a little blurry, but we do know that they are the decedents of the four hounds that were in France in the 16th century. This dog then came along from the line of Grand Fauve de Bretagne. Here it is not sure but this hound was a tall hound, and they bred this dog smaller, it could have been that they wanted a dog with the scent ability of this Grand but needed a dog that was for the walking hunters of the day.

Whatever the reason by the 19th century it had very much been achieved. These dogs can hunt in packs. There have been thoughts that this dog had become rare but in 1985, there were 884 registered. By 1998, 1,500 were registered, from here the numbers have gone down slightly. These dogs’ are intertwined with French history and this dog is clearly important to the French.

Temperament: The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a small dog who has a great big personality. Here is a dog that has become a companion dog but has the courage and hunting abilities of a much larger dog. The dog is hardy and very friendly; this is a lively dog and will need a considerable amount of daily exercise. They are active and are best suited to an active family, or they will need to be used as a hunting dog.

This is a scent hound, and if they smell a scent, they wish to follow all training can go out the window as the scent becomes the most important thing at that time, so keeping them on a lead is best when out walking, unless you know that it is a safe area to allow the dog off the lead. They do train well but it can be forgotten with the right smell.

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne dog needs a firm calm pack leader. They love children but are better with older children. Socializing this dog well will help the dog to cope with new situations. They are very nimble and a good pet but caution is needed to be used around other smaller pets such as rabbits as their natural instincts are in the hunting of this type of animal. The most common causes of death in the UK for the Basset Fauve de Bretagne are road traffic accidents. This dog will need a garden that has very good fencing.

Health issues: The Basset Fauve de Bretagne has good health overall, but they have had reported problems in reproductive areas and ocular.
Grooming: The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is easy to groom, and it will need brushing on a weekly basis.
