Description: The main feature of this breed, the Bergamasco, is the dog’s coat. This is long thick and shabby. This dog is medium in size with the dog being 23 ½ inches and the bitch being 22 inches.

The weight being 70-84 pounds for the dog and 57-71 pounds for the bitches’. They are well proportioned in look, and are solid compact dog. This is a strong dog. The coat is one of their characteristics and defends the dog.

There are three types of coat; one is a fine dense undercoat that is oily, two is Goat hair, that is long strands of harsh hair, three is Woolly top coat this is finer and soft to the touch. This weaves together to create the flock which is what we see.

Mats start at the spine and grow downward and over time reach the ground. The color is a camouflage when working in the mountains. The coat colors are grey or silver grey to anthracite, which is a coal color. The Bergamasco life expectancy is 13-15 years.

History: The Bergamasco has ancient origins and is at least 2000 years old. This is a dog of the Alps in the Vallese region. They were often alone with hundreds of sheep to watch over. It is thought to have come from the shepherds and cattle dogs that came from the Orient with the migration of nomadic populations.

Dogs were commonly exchange with others when sheep were sold. The dog soon became suitable to the Alpine Arc. For a long time, the bloodlines were kept a secret by the shepherds of the time as these were very valued dogs.

Today the dogs are still best used in their role as sheepdogs but can be used for cattle. The Bergamasco is best suited to cold climates even today.

Temperament: The Bergamasco is a very intelligent dog that uses this intelligentsia daily. Here is a strong balanced dog that is brave. They make a wonderful watch dog and know everything that is going on around them all the time, even if they appear to be sleeping, they will still know what is happening.

This dog is reserved with strangers and tells you if someone is coming. To see this dog with children is a wonderful sight, they are tolerant, attentive and protective of their young owners.

Here is a dog that will seek out the child and want to play with them, giving a true friendship. They are good with other dogs providing the other dog is no threat to them or the family.

They need owners who have a natural air of authority that can give calm and consistent rules that the dog has to follow. This is not the dog for the meek owner, and you will have to fulfill this breeds’ need for walking and mental exercise daily.

The Bergamasco needs a job to do and will be best in the country were open walks are easy to do. This is a genuine dog that is simple kind and very bright that is also capable of thinking for themselves and for the family.

Health issues: There are no health issues, and they have good health generally.
Grooming: This is a fairly high grooming needed, and it is best to check with the breeder before you undertake home grooming for this breed.

The cords or flocks are natural for this dog and without them, they can have skin problems as the skin produces natural oils that need to be in the coat.

Living conditions: The Bergamasco is best suited to natural cold climates. They do not do well in an apartment and will need a garden of medium size with plenty of daily exercise.
