Biewer Dog Breed Information

Description: The Biewer is a small toy Terrier. Although this is a small dog it is powerful and in good proportion. This is a long haired dog. The frame is compact.

The face is fine and well balanced to look at. The ears are erect and sit on top of the head, being wider at the bottom and triangular in shape. The eyes are round and dark in color.

The Biewer Yorkie height of the dog is 8 ½ inches with the weight of 7 pounds. The coat is a main feature and is long from the base of the skull to the tip of the tail and is very like human hair.

This hair normally grows to the ground and is silky and fine. The coat colors are; white or blue white, broken or blocks of solid, black and blue, white and brown should be on the face and chest.

The Biewer head should also have blue and gold marking that should be even. Life expectancy is 12-15 years.

History: The Biewer was bred from two Yorkshire Terriers that were owner by Gertrude and Werner Biewer and on the 20th of January in 1984 had a piebald Yorkshire, this is a recessive gene and a puppy was born with this.

This little puppy set off the breed of the Biewer Yorkie, through selective breeding. This breed was recognized by the ACH in1986 only two years from the first piebald.

Temperament: The Biewer Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog that thinks it is a large dog. Ever keen this dog is adventurous, courageous and loyal.

This dog has a lot of energy that needs to be used up in a positive way. They get along with older children but are not so good with young children. The Biewer can get up to mischief and loves to play.

This dog is wary of strangers and can be aggressive towards them, and dogs that they do not know if not properly socialized and trained.

This is a demanding dog that needs to be busy and has a lot of energy that needs to be used.

With good leadership and house rules this dog can be a great companion dog that is protective of its family.

Being a good watch dog is one of their skills. This is a dog that will defend its territory. With good release of this breeds energy, they make sweet loyal and loving pets that have a good nature.

The Biewer Yorkie dog may need training, to stop barking, as they love to bark. This breed is slow to potty train but do get there with positive praise and constant reinforcement.

They love a good pack leader, that is kind, calm, and firm. Small Dog syndrome should be avoided as this is where the dog thinks they are the boss and so becomes aggressive or over protective of people or things.

With the right balance, this is a wonderful dog to have as a pet.

Health issues: The Biewer Yorkiecan have liver shunt, leg-calve perthes disease, retinal atrophy and tracheal collapse.

Grooming: The length of the coat will say, to some extent, the time needed but all coats will need combing through on a weekly schedule.

They can be bathed at home every few weeks. Using a dog conditioner will help to keep the coat in good order.

Living conditions: The Biewer Yorkie can live in an apartment if given enough daily exercise.
