Description: The Briquet Griffon Vendeen is a dog of medium size and they are known for their coat that is shaggy and white.

The height is 20-22 inches in both the male and female. The weight is 48-53 pound in both as well.

The head is medium in size, and this is the same for the muzzle. The ears hang down from the top of the head to about the level of the dog’s cheeks; these are pendent shaped, supple and narrow.

The Briquet Griffon Vendeen has a scissor bite. This dog has large dark eyes. The tail is short and carried horizontal, to the ground, when the dog is alert.

The legs are in good proportion to the body. The coat is a double coat that is thick and wiry to the touch, this is of a bushy look. The under coat is dense and soft.

The Briquet Griffon Vendeen has a moustache and bushy eyebrows. Colors that are seen are; white and orange, black and white, tricolor, and orange and brown. The life expectancy is about 12 years.

History: The Briquet Griffon Vendeen comes from France. They were nearly made extinct in the Second World War, and are still rare, in their home country.

They are one of four rough coated breeds from the west coast of France, from the Vendee region. They were bred down in size from the Grand Griffon Vendeen.

Many royal families used this dog as a show dog. They have been used as a hunting dog mostly and have hunted small, game by scent.

They can hunt as a team, and have been known to hunt wild boar.

Temperament: The Briquet Griffon Vendeen is an intelligent dog that really loves to work.

They have great drive and energy, with a love to be active. This dog will need good daily walks to rid the dog of so much energy. They are best suited to an active person or family.

They are patient and can be trained easily. Training with a firm air of authority is best for this breed.

They will need you to be a good pack leader and set the house rules, which have to be kept. Socialize this dog well, as a puppy, and this will help with any shyness or anxiety the dog may feel.

As this is a bright dog they will need mental and physical activities, daily. Here is a dog that is loyal and is a self learner. This breed is independent and of a happy nature.

A firm, but not harsh, approach works well for this breed. The Briquet Griffon Vendeen is good with children but this works best if the child is a young leader, for the dog.

Without the right training, and releasing of their high energy levels, this dog can become snappy or spoilt, so great training and good leadership is very important.

The Briquet Griffon Vendeen does not do well with other non canine pets in the same home, they are hunting dogs and this is part of the dog’s make up, so can not be forgotten.

This is a breed that will not like to be on their own for any great length of time.

Health issues: The Briquet Griffon Vendeen has some health issues and these are; epilepsy, collie eye, deafness, hypothyroidism and allergies.

Grooming: The Briquet Griffon Vendeen has a medium to long coat. So grooming is important, for this breed.

Weekly grooming is needed to keep the coat tangle free. Due to the fact this breed can get skin allergies, keep a close eye on the skin so that problems can be sorted sooner rather than later.

Living conditions: The Briquet Griffon Vendeen can live in an apartment but you really have to use up the energy this dog has in as many ways as you can, before this dog is tired.

Remember the dog has mental energy as well that needs to be used.

The garden has to be medium in size with good fencing to keep this breed safe from running after a scent.
