Best Dog Breeds for Kids with Allergies
There are several kinds of dogs that fall under the classification of hypoallergenic, meaning they don’t produce the allergies that most pets do. Most kids that are allergic to dogs are actually allergic to the dander in their fur.
These dogs don’t produce that dander:
Yorkies and Morkies
One of the best smaller dog breeds where shedding is minimal and according to many doctors they do tend to be better for kids and adults with allergies.
Please keep in mind that you still need to talk to your doctor to make sure they agree. Below are a few more dog breeds that are considered good for kids with allergies.
Poodles have very dense, curly hair that hardly sheds. They come in three sizes, so they are great for families that want small or large dogs. They are typically very low-maintenance dogs that don’t require a lot of living space, but should be exercised daily. They are very easy to train, and instead of simply accommodating themselves to one person, they typically bond to every member of a household
Since it is usually the dander in dogs’ fur that kids are allergic to, Chinese Crested is a dog breed that is perfect for kids because they are an almost hairless breed. They are typically more popular in dog shows than in households, but they are a breed that will bond with more than one person, and they are particularly good with older kids
This French breed is a perfect companion for younger kids because they are very calm dogs. While playful in nature, they are not exceedingly hyper. In terms of grooming, however, they are fairly high-maintenance. Not only do they have a dense coat of fur, but they have a white, curly outer coat. If you don’t mind the grooming, they are typically very appealing to little children because of their white and fluffy appearance.
This breed is very closely related to the Bichon Frise. They are toy dogs, but they are very sturdy, which makes them ideal for little kids that may not quite understand how to be gentle. On the other hand, they are a very intelligent breed, which makes them very compatible with older kids. They have soft, long-haired coats, but they don’t shed
Portuguese Water Dog
As a single-coated dog, they don’t have an undercoat to shed. Not only do these dogs get along very well with children, they also have an interesting characteristic. If they are raised with the children, they will consider the kids a part of their own canine litter.
Any dog breed can be great with kids with enough training, but there are still some that are more compatible than others. When buying, keep an eye out for what others say about the different breeds.
