History: The Akbash is a rare breed and is also called Coban Kopegi and Akbas.

This dog has some 3000 years of history, as a working dog for shepherds who bred this dog white to blend into the flock and be different to the predators.

It is thought to be related to other great white dogs such as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog and the Komondor. In Turkey the name “akbas” means “white head”.

It is thought that the breed originated in Turkey and spread from there. The Akbash is a unique mix of sight hound and molosser.

Temperament: The Akbash is intelligent and will think twice if they do not wish to follow a command.

You have to be a good strong leader, who can be gentle but firm, from the beginning for this dog to follow commands.

They tend to go into two categories one is dominating and the other a more submissive.

With both, you have to be the leader but the submissive type will need more gentle training.

Both require firm rules and to have an owner that is experienced in dog training and daily care.

Consistency is the key, as well as a lot of mental and physical exercise. A big garden with good high fencing is a must.

This dog is protective of the home and family and some thought has to go into how family and friends can get to your door without meeting the Akbash without the owner.

This is and has always been a guard dog. Socializing them from as young as possible needs to be done as they are a naturally aggressive dog.

They can be frustrated at city life and need to not to have the barriers that city life brings, like roads blocked off or gardens and cars.

It is instinctively a dog for open territory and even simply being surrounded by buildings can make the dog aggressive.

This is a working dog and needs to work, to bring out the best of this breed.

This breed needs to be supervised as it is a free thinker and will act as it sees fit without the owner present, if the owner is there the dog will seek guidance from them. With the owner, they are happy friendly dog, completely devoted to their family.

They have strong maternal instincts and this makes them good with children, from their human families.

Providing that the owner has good pack leader techniques and is consistent this is a good dog if you have space to house and exercise them.

Health issues: They can have hip dysplasia and OCD, which is a disease of the cartilage and bones of large fast growing dogs.

This is not common but you do need to have the test done to make sure your dog is free of these.

Grooming: The Akbash has a coat that doesn’t matt and is non smelly. You will still have to brush this dog regularly, and they are an above average shedder.

Living conditions: This is not a dog for an apartment. This dog will require a large garden.
