How To Bathe Your Yorkie

How To Bathe Your Yorkie

Bathing your Yorkie is a lot of fun, but be prepared to get wet. Most dogs like water and feel quite relaxed when getting a bath.

My Yorkie Pumpkin does not like it at all. The first few times she was just terrified. Now, she knows what to expect and tries to escape every chance she gets.

Yorkies have long silky coats that get dirty very easily. I usually wash my Yorkie Pumpkin once every 7 to 10 days, depending on how dirty she is. If it rains a lot and she gets very dirty, I’ll wash her once a week. I know that some Yorkie owners bath their dogs only once a month.

Start by getting all the supplies and preparing the area.
Items you will need

Shampoo or Puppy shampoo
Conditioner or Puppy conditioner
2 large towels
Medium size plastic dishpan or non-slip mat
brush
hairdryer
cotton wools
Before Bathing

Before washing your dog, check for hair tangles and knots. A quick brush should help loosen them up. To get rid of bigger tangles, use a de-tangling spray.

You can wash your Yorkie in a tub or a sink. If you are using a tub, use a non-slip mat or a dishpan so your dog feels safe and not sliding all over. I personally wash Pumpkin in a tub in the plastic dishpan. If you are using a sink, keep in mind that sinks are very high from the ground, so you would have to keep a closer eye on your Yorkie.

When washing a puppy, make sure to use shampoo and conditioner specially designed for puppies. Human products are too acidic and might irritate the skin. Bath time for puppies can be very stressful. To calm your puppy down, start by bringing it into the bathroom and giving it a treat. Then turn the water on and give it a treat again.

Bath Time: Place your dog into the dishpan. Plug your dog’s ears with cotton wools to avoid getting water into his ears. Using a soft cloth or a sponge, wash around the eyes, nose, and ears.

Using spray nozzle, gently pour water starting from the top of their head and work your way down to the tail. Always use lukewarm water. After your puppy is completely wet, apply the shampoo, being careful not to get any in the ears or eyes.

Wait for a minute for the shampoo to work and then rinse thoroughly. If it’s been a while since the last bath, shampoo twice. Next, apply conditioner and let it work for a few minutes. Rinse. Make sure to rise every bit of shampoo and conditioner residue to avoid skin irritation.

Tip: It is a good idea to rinse the head last because water on the head might result in an automatic body shake.

Drying Time

Next, wrap your Yorkie in a clean towel and wait for a few minutes for the towel to soak up any excess water. Do not let the dog run around with wet hair. Yorkie can easily get a cold.

Place your dog on another dry towel on the floor. Use a hairdryer to dry the hair. Make sure the air is not too hot and not too close. Set the hairdryer on low and keep it about 16 inches away from the dog. Keep checking with the hand. Brushing helps to speed up drying.

After your dog is completely dry, give it a treat and let it run around. Sofia usually expresses her happiness by running and rolling around.

Hair Styling: My Yorkie Pumpkin has long hair, so after bathing, drying and running, I try to get them from her face and her eyes. First, I secure it with a soft hairband. Then, I use a small hair clip for shorter hair.

Tip: It took me a while before I found these hair clips. Surprisingly, they are not sold in pet stores. I found them in a regular store, in a baby section.
