Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?

Veterinarians often encounter this question in clinics which indicates that it is not only your problem.

Dogs throughout the world are engaged in eating grass.

If you think about it, you can observe that it may be due to some deficiency in diet and nutrition.

When you look at the other side, you find your eating a well-balanced commercial diet containing all the essential nutrients.

So, there is no chance of nutritional deficiency.

If dogs are not nutritionally deficient, then why are they engaged in eating grass.

Stomach Distress

You may have observed your dog trying to eat the grass in a rush and then suddenly vomiting due to stomach distress.

You can find the conflict between chicken and egg here.

Your dog may eat grass in stomach distress, and grass helps him to vomit.

Or your dog eats grass which causes stomach distress and vomiting.

Studies change the perspective of this observation.

Experiments show that only twenty-five percent of dogs vomit after eating grass, which explains that eating grass soothes the stomach.

So far, we don’t know the exact reason behind this behavior.

Roughages

There is a strong opinion that dogs eat grass to fulfill the needs of roughages.

Roughages are an essential part of the diet as they smoothen the digestive movement of the stomach and intestine and help indigestion.

Your dog needs roughage, and the grass is an excellent source of fiber.

Grass helps your dog to perform bodily functions more smoothly.

Psychological Behavior

So many people argue that it is a psychological behavior.

Their observation is based on the fact that dogs are very much attached to their owners.

They crave spending time with their owners, and when their owners are gone out, they are stressed out.

You may find yourself or your friends biting nails or scratching clothes or paper in a time of stress.

The same can be the case with dogs. When being outside, the grass is close to dogs.

They find it an excellent opportunity to eat grass to release stress.

Instinct

Eating grass may be an instinctual behavior.

Studies show that fecal examination of wolves shows that 11-47% of wolves eat grass.

Wolves are the ancestors of modern-day domesticated dogs.

In the wild, they are not supplied with balanced kibble diets, and therefore they may eat grass to fulfill the nutritional requirements.

Besides all that, why can’t we come to a simple explanation that dogs like to eat grass?

Your dog may enjoy the texture and taste of fresh and green grass.

Some dogs might like the taste of freshly grown grass.
